History: WikiSuite vs Nextcloud

Nextcloud and WikiSuite have some similarities. This page is to explain the differences and rationale of choices. You likely will be interested in the other alternatives to WikiSuite.

Nextcloud (a fork of ownCloud) started out as a file sync app but has since branched out to other enterprise use cases via apps, ex.: mail and Video- & audio-conferencing

Similarities

  • Both are FLOSS solutions that offer features for the enterprise

Differences

  • NextCloud (a fork of ownCloud) started as a file centric solution and progressively added more features (email, video-conference, etc.). WikiSuite started as a wiki/web page centric-solution, and added more features (file sync, video conference, email, etc.). See Files vs web pages
  • Nextcloud offers a lot of features but it doesn't have the feature scope of WikiSuite.
  • Nextcloud offers functionality via plugins, while WikiSuite's philosophy is built-in but optional features: http://pluginproblems.com/Modules-Extensions
  • For file syncing as of 2019-01
    • NextCloud is better for teams.
    • WikiSuite via Syncthing offers p2p sync
    • The WikiSuite roadmap is to build team features around Syncthing (in ClearOS and/or Tiki) to be a credible team file sharing alternative to NextCloud. Please see: Syncthing in WikiSuite
